Scientists could have uncovered a whole new whale species

The seven-ton fossil was unearthed in June throughout a development excavation on the Prima Deshecha landfill in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County Waste & Recycling announced in a statement.

A paleontologist with Paleo Options Lab, an organization employed by the County of Orange –paleontologists should monitor development excavations beneath California regulation — was working on the web site when a big bone was noticed.

Paleontologists have preliminarily recognized the bones as belonging to an extinct species of whale that lived through the late Miocene to the early Pliocene interval, based on the assertion.

The whale bones are now at the Cooper Center, where fossils and artifacts found in Orange County are preserved for research.

Kristina Hamm, spokeswoman with Orange County Waste & Recycling, instructed CNN extra bones had been uncovered, together with what seems to be a cranium, decrease jaw, snout, ribs, limb bones, scapula, humerus, and the clavicle.

“The ear bones are significantly essential in species identification, and since now we have all the cranium of the whale we’re excited to have the ability to precisely determine the species,” Hamm stated.

On Tuesday, the fossils had been moved from the location to the Orange County Parks’ John D. Cooper Center for additional research. Also called the Cooper Lab, the middle preserves and curates fossils and artifacts discovered inside Orange County, based on its web site.

The findings had been beforehand coated in white plaster to guard them from climate components and stabilize them for transportation.

Geraldine Aron, head paleontologist with Paleo Options Lab, told CNN affiliate KTLA in July they consider the whale “could be a brand new species.”

The brand new discovery “helps us actually outline the evolution of whales all through time,” Aron stated.
